CLUB ETHOS

BTYC Sailsports aims to offer first class sailing in a safe and supportive environment. Membership is open to all and we endeavor to keep the fees affordable and to offer new members a complete range of equipment to get them sailing.

We have a variety of club boats and windsurfing boards to suit a wide range of physical abilities including some boats for people with disabilities. We have active members over 70 years old and are happy to teach sailing to anybody who has a desire to experience this enjoyable sport.

Despite a strong emphasis on training BTYC, is also a highly competitive racing club and our members compete at home and in a wide range of events across the UK.

Of course we are also a social club and our bar with its extensive views across the water is where much of what we have experienced on the water is re-lived, remembered and passed on to others.

BTYC is members' club entirely run by volunteers with no professional staff. Many members contribute their skills to make the club successful and we have around 25 Assistant Instructors and 30 fully RYA qualified instructors, in everything from Sailing to Power Boat driving. There is no pressure to volunteer but many people find quite unexpectedly, that they get a quiet satisfaction from making a contribution be it teaching someone to Windsurf, helping with a social event or advising on the club accounts.

BTYC also has an ethos of self improvement. Most members try all the time to become a little better at what they do and to expand their skill base. The club supports members in achieving this, sometimes financially, but always through encouragement and appreciation of a job well done.

Roger Walton won a 2006 RYA "Community Award for Outstanding Contribution". For more details click on Citation for award
