Windsurfing

Thursday Training Starts on 12 April 2012!

David at Dahab

Windsurfing at BTYC is run by a friendly welcoming team of enthusiastic volunteers.  We can offer our members high quality club kit - windsurfing boards, rigs and wet suits (this is all included as part of the membership fee).

If you are a newcomer to windsurfing you can start out by turning up to one of our Thursday Evening Training sessions.

Once you join the Club there is also free training available during Thursday Evenings from 6PM starting on 12 April, 2012 to 6 September, 2012.

Once Checked Out you will be able to windsurf most times during the week using the clubs kit.

Since BTYC is a non-profit making club run by volunteers costs are kept to a minimum and money can be reinvested back into club kit to keep it up to date and of good quality.

Members of BTYC can also take advantage of Windsurfing Courses so that you can progress more quickly and gain RYA qualifications.  These are run throughout the season by qualified RYA Instructors; this means you can be assured that training is both safe and run to a recognised standard.

How to get Windsurfing

Thursday Evening Training and New Members

Just come along to BTYC on a Thursday Evening where you will be able to meet other windsurfers in a supporting and encouraging environment and you will be able to give it a go.

You don’t have to have any experience; we just ask that you are confident in the water as during the initial sessions you might end up getting a little wet.

If you are already an experienced windsurfer you are also very welcome to come down since you will be able to see how the club operates and give some of our boards a try.

When do they run?

From 6.00pm, starting on 12 April 2012 and continuing through the summer until 6 September 2012.  We always aim to make as much use of the evening as possible so each session will last as long as there is daylight, we aim to finish about sunset.

What do I need to bring?

Just turn up as early as possible and sign on in the Club House.  We have wetsuits and buoyancy aids for members to use free of charge – just bring your swimming kit and a pair of old trainers/tennis shoes you don’t mind getting wet.

How much does it cost?

The Taster Session costs £10 (taken off your membership if you join us).  It’s a chance to see if you like us and the way we do things before committing yourself.  You can have up to Two Taster Sessions; after that you will need to join the Club.

Do I need to book?

No, just turn up on a Thursday evening around 6pm and report to the BTYC Sailsports Club where you will receive a friendly welcome and full instruction on how to get windsurfing.

How to Progress Your Windsurfing

BTYC will be running a number of RYA windsurfing courses throughout the season for its members; these range from ‘Start Windsurfing’ up to the ’Intermediate Planing’ levels.  BTYC also encourages the mutual support of techniques and skills from the more experienced windsurfers to those who are newer to the sport;  this means there is always someone around who would be able to offer a little advice and support.

New for this season we will be introducing a Racing Series in association with some of the other local clubs around the London area.  This will always be aimed at having fun and enhancing the keys skills to make you a better windsurfer.

What is Club Check-Out?

When you have learned to tack, gybe and get round a three cornered course and paddle yourself back to land, you will be ready to be checked out.   This means that you can use Club equipment outside formal training sessions.

If you’ve windsurfed before, just tell us and we’ll arrange a check-out – either on a Thursday evening, or at a weekend.

Club Windsurfing Kit

BTYC has a range of good quality boards to enable novices and intermediates to quickly progress using new modern boards and sails.

All club kit is free of charge to use at the club once you are signed off (see Club check-out).

Your Own Windsurfing Kit

Once you have mastered the basics you will be encouraged to buy and sell your own kit since it will help you progress and offer more flexibility with coastal trips and sailing at different venues etc.  You are able to store your kit at the club for a small fee; this means your kit will always be waiting and ready to use without the need to transport it to the club each time.
